Search for traces - right-wing extremism and civic engagement in Rudow

Pupils from the Matthias Claudius elementary school in Berlin-Neukölln explored their neighborhood by means of city rallies and got to know facilities for children and young people as well as other civil society actors. The city rallies also explored topics such as immigration, migration and integration and highlighted the social diversity that can also be found in suburban areas. Based on the discussions about diversity and change in Rudow, the pupils developed their own building blocks for further city rallies. These building blocks could later be used to make the diversity in Rudow tangible for other children and young people in a playful way.

The pupils focused in particular on civic engagement against right-wing extremism. They deepened their knowledge of the National Socialist era and went on a search for traces of it in Rudow. Building on a city map created in 2011, they developed a guided tour of the district to visit sites of arson attacks, places of right-wing extremist presence, historical sites and places of civic democratic engagement in Rudow. Following on from the “United Colors of Rudow” project, they dealt with right-wing extremist symbols/graffiti in public spaces. To accompany the project and in close cooperation with the pupils, didactic materials were created for use in schools. This also makes it easier for subsequent classes to get to grips with the topic and to engage with the subject matter, and provides thematic support for the guided tours of the district.
