Youth cultural workshops for old and new Berliners
Girls and women are underrepresented both on hip-hop stages and in skate parks. They often lack protected spaces where they can try themselves out. Together with the Berlin music label Springstoff, Cultures Interactive therefore worked with refugees and non-refugees from Berlin on hip-hop and skateboarding in Spot on, girls! The girls were able to practise DJing, rapping and dancing, skateboarding and drawing comics, with all workshops also aiming to create meeting places between old and new Berliners. It turned out that communication between very different girls on the topics of hip-hop, comics and skateboarding worked extremely well in the protected environment of the girls' workshops.
The first year of the project included a week of skateboarding workshops for girls and young women. Workshops on breakdancing, rap, graffiti and DJing were also offered during the summer vacations. There was also a hip-hop project week for girls and young women during the winter vacations. Comic workshops were added in the second year of the project. In the third project year, neighborhood discovery tours were also offered and places in Berlin were explored where girls and women started their own projects. Youth cultural city rallies made youth cultures visible in urban spaces and gave participants the opportunity to show their favorite places in the city, talk about places they avoid and places they would like to visit.
On various occasions, the girls and young women also had the opportunity to present their newly acquired skills to a selected audience and try out their skills on a large stage. After a workshop on admission and safety, the girls were of course also responsible for moderation and admission. The project ended in summer 2019 with a future workshop Berliner Girls*. There, the participating girls were able to show what they had learned during the project and concretize wishes and ideas for themselves and other Berlin girls.
In 2019, Spot on, girls! was awarded second place in the Hatun Sürücü Prize, which is awarded by the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives.
